Meanwhile, back at my vintage Underwood....
Nobody cared about dog shows in America until 1874. That year, P. H. Bryson, a severely wounded Confederate soldier, who had recovered nicely with the help of his hunting dogs, felt that his dogs were better than his neighbors’ dogs, and thus was born the first American Dog Show, which was held in Chicago.
The first Long Island Dog Show was held at The Fair Grounds in Mineola also in 1874. In 1877 the newly reorganized Westminster Kennel Club held its first NY Bench Show after extensive planning during the 3 years prior. Westbury and SCKC proudly continue the Dog Show tradition on Long Island.
THE WEBMASTER'S DESK
The 2026 shows at Planting Fields will see some changes. Our friends at the Apples will not be joining us this year and we will miss them. We look ahead to the changes, challenges, successes, and as always, your help! Watch for updates frequently, and plan to assist.
Special thanks go out to all the Westburians and friends who helped out on-site and behind the scenes last year, and to those who couldn't physically assist, thank you for your support and donations as well. Stay tuned...

A "note" or few about the Underwood's music. It is a clip from Leroy Anderson's energetic 1953 "Typewriter" song. You are looking at a single image video, set for one play. SnowDog magic!
I still have my c. 1920s #5 Underwood typewriter, like the one in the photo! It weighs a ton, and still works, though it needs servicing! Underwood #5 typewriters, manufactured in NYC and Hartford, CT., became the office standard. This typewriter font is called My Underwood!
