WESTBURY FLASHBACK
Whether they arrived in a 1916 Model T, or a new 1929 Lincoln Model L, visitors to, and exhibitors at, the early Westbury Kennel Shows came in droves. A century later it is SUVs, hybrids, RVs and electrics. Farms, fields, and forests have given way to houses, malls, and parking lots. Roads are paved, not mud and ruts, but they are crowded and have the usual assortment of
pot holes! From the Roaring Twenties to today's Controversial Twenties, with numerous breeds by our side {mostly Terriers in those early years} Westbury Kennel Association has written many successful pages in over a century, and we'll continue that tradition in the years ahead.

Westbury sprouted at the end of WW-1, reveled through the Roaring 1920s, survived the 1930's Great Depression, endured WW-2, transformed in the '50s and '60s, and beyond, Our background music has gone from Radio-eclipsed Victrolas to digital; from Jazz, to Big Bands, to Rock & Roll, and more; essentially from Flappers to Rappers! Westbury has learned much, and grown wiser, in every one of its 100+ years. We have seen and heard it all. We have persevered, and we have survived.
A few notes about our Mascot, the Smooth Fox Terrier: https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/smooth-fox-terrier/ There is a large dog crate full of info on the breed. Long ago the Fox Terrier was what we now call a Designer Dog, a mixed breed, a mutt(?). More refined by the early 20th century, it became quite popular in the USA, so much so that Westbury, which started out as a Terrier Group before becoming an all-breed club in 1923, adopted it as our mascot! Try a Google Search on Smooth Fox Terriers in the Early 20th Century USA and read more than you thought could ever be written about a dog breed! Learn about the differences between Smooth and Wire, which came first, and a few other similar dog breeds! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Terrier
Westminster introduced its first Best in Show competition in 1907. The Smooth Fox Terrier took it in 1907, 1908, and 1909.
Politics aside, President Herbert Hoover (1929-1933) had multiple dogs. Among others, Big Boy was a Wire Fox Terrier while Sonnie and Big Ben were Smooth Fox Terriers. Hoover was the only President to have Fox Terriers - and both varieties at that!
Have our dogs changed? You bet they have, but thankfully they all still and will love us unconditionally, and we still and will love them dearly.
