[A] According to Barbara Miller’s History of the LIKC, the club apparently allowed the use of its name in the movie but was not involved in the production. Barbara Miller is LIKC's President and Historian a/o 2025. LIKC is much older than Westbury, having been established and recognized by AKC in 1903. Reference: my research email of 07/10/25 from Bert Rowley who is a member of LIKC. Image of history page is saved in a WORD doc.
Tech-notes: We use an older version of Photoshop Elements [v6], MS Paint 3D, and Canva, to edit our images. We also use an online AI app called RemoveBG to supplement our efforts. Our sound clips are edited with Audacity. We have experimented with, but not yet used on this site, an online AI sound editor called Ultimate Vocal Remover. All apps are quite successful in solving our editing challenges.
X - It's What's Happening Baby was a show done by Murray the K in 1965 at the Brooklyn Fox theater. His expression became part of American lexicon, and is now a bit dated, but NOT for your Webmaster! For those of you who have no idea who Murray the K was, you also have little idea of what you missed back then! LOL!! Our research found a promo trailer for you, and you can check out some of the music of the era with this live Brooklyn Fox recording and its Side 2.
Your Webmaster is not from Brooklyn. He is from The Bronx and Queens. Queens had the Lowe's Valencia and The Bronx had the Lowe's Paradise. He who knows most of the '50s and '60s music today, as a youngster, missed all the great live shows produced by Alan Freed, usually at the Brooklyn Paramount, and by Murray the K at the Fox. The Apollo in Harlem was one of NYC's premiere music venues as well. The shows there were more Jazz and Soul oriented and featured many of the most outstanding vocal and orchestral performers of the day. Of all the classic live theaters, The Apollo remains as a music venue. The Brooklyn Paramount re-opened in the Spring of 2024. Who'd've thought you could learn so much about NYC music history at a Dog Club website?
[1] Buster Brown started as a comic strip in the New York Herald 1902 (to 1923). He was created by Richard F. Outcault.
Buster Brown was based on a real person from Flushing, NY.
Buster had a sister [some sources say girl friend] named Mary Jane, who was based on Outcault’s daughter of the same name.
Buster's dog Tige (a stylized Pit Pull Terrier) completed the famous trio.
Adopted as the mascot of the Brown Shoe Company in 1904, Buster Brown,
along with Mary Jane, and his dog Tige, became well known to the American public.
“That's my dog Tige. He lives in a shoe. I'm Buster Brown. Look for me in there, too.”
In 1920s, when Westbury was first starting out as an All-breed Club,
Mary-Janes were a shoe style manufactured by Brown Shoe Co. for both boys and girls.
Named after Buster’s sister, they are still made today in many forms,
and are commonly seen on stage as dance shoes. Buster Brown still exists as Caleres (a/o 2015).
